  • Discovery students donate teddy bears to comfort kids
    02.26.10

Teddy bears donated by students at Discovery Elementary School fill the cab of Fire District 1’s ladder truck based at the nearby Mariner Fire Station. With donated bears are, front row from left, Firefighter Nathan Crawford, Capt. Jim Starck, Ruth Christainsen and Spencer Bolex; and back row, Calista Perez and Firefighter Paul Easter. Firefighters will carry the teddy bears on engines and medic units to give to children who need comforting in the emergency situations.

Students at Discovery Elementary School recently collected teddy bears and other stuffed animals for Snohomish County Fire District 1 crews to give to children in emergency situations.

The Discovery PTA and students have been donating teddy bears to Fire District 1 for more than 10 years. Students presented the stuffed animals to firefighters from the nearby Mariner Fire Station, who visited the school with the ladder truck on Feb. 26 to say thank you.

“We appreciate this donation from the students of Discovery Elementary School. We carry teddy bears on all our engines and medic units to comfort children we see on emergency calls. Community donations make this possible,” said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Fire District 1.

Fire District 1 is largest provider of fire and emergency medical services in Snohomish County, with full-time staffing at 11 fire stations. The department serves more than 225,000 residents in the unincorporated communities of Silver Firs, Eastmont, Mariner, Lake Serene, Picnic Point, Martha Lake, Mariner, Lake Stickney, Norma Beach, Hilltop, Hilton Lake, Pioneer Trails and the cities of Brier, Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace and the town of Woodway.
